Lecture at NCCC: The Positive Effect of Art on Those in Prison by Pyillis Kornfeld
Phyllis will lecture on the positive effect of art on those in prison. This event is co- sponsored by a Center for Teaching mini-grant, the Criminal Justice Association and the Cultural Planning Committee. Below are some samples of work that has been completed by prisoners that have worked with Phyllis.
For 32 years, Phyllis has been working closely with incarcerated men and women around the country—all security levels from county jail to death row. Some people have been in her class for as long as 10 years and Phyllis continues to do her work regularly. Her belief and lecture will discuss the serious engagement in creating art, and how it stimulates the exercise of a person's better nature. We need the arts as a powerful tool for change in the individuals, their peers, family, community, so they will be in better shape when they come out than they were in when they arrived. Phyllis’s degrees are in Art Education. She is the author of Cellblock Visions: Prison Art in America, (Princeton University Press) and a contributor to Art Education Beyond the Classroom (Palgrave Macmillan). Serious engagement in creating art stimulates the exercise of a person's better nature. We need the arts as a powerful tool for change in the individuals, their peers, family, community, so they will be in better shape when they come out than they were in when they arrived. The brilliant artwork that Phyllis shows and the quotes from the artists make this powerfully evident. The incarcerated people come fully alive through this presentation and their humaneness has a strong effect on the audience. |
