The Yarn Bombing Begins in Seven Months

by Eric Hammer

PictureEric Hammer
What better way to change the look of downtown Torrington, than to bomb it.  Yarn Bomb it, that is.  Come June 2016, yarn bombing coordinators along with hundreds of participants hope to transform T-town in a weave of vibrant colors.  A work this ambitious takes time and well, a whole lot of yarn bombs and people to make them.  But before you blindly enlist, ask yourself, what the heck is a yarn bomb?

Boom. Yarn bombing is a form of temporary street art where yarn in any form (knit, crochet, latch hook, cross stitch, braided, wrapped) is attached to an object in a public space.

The
yarn bombing exploded in 2005 after a few obsessive knitters from Houston stared at their yarn scraps and decided their work was not yet finished.  What started as a single cry of "Painted Cows out.  Yarn bombs in!" took hold.  Soon, post boxes to bridges, nothing escaped these colorful sweaters of wool.  Now a global phenomenon, the yarn bomb craze is coming to Torrington.

Presently, 200 Torrington sites have been chosen as primary targets. Area lone bombers are welcome but teams are forming, especially for the real big bombs.  Expert to newbie, are all welcome to join this audacious community cause!  Five Points Gallery, located on Main and Water streets, will offer informational and instructional sessions beginning Thursday, November 8th.  Please visit Five Points website or call 860-618-7222.  Don't just think about your town's future.  Yarn Bomb it!

A Note from Noel

Hello fellow yarn bombers,

We are very excited to get the Torrington Yarn bomb public arts project under way.  We hope that as you meet with friends and family this Thanksgiving you will spread the word about this exciting project.  I know I am looking forward to spending time with my team of friends and family over the next few months planning and executing a design for our site –what better way to connect with everyone. Attached you will find our first newsletter.  We will expand this in the future by adding design tips and pictures of work in progress.  Please share your ideas and photos with us on Facebook (Torrington Yarn bomb) or by e-mail so that they can be included.

Newsletters will let you know about our calendar events.  Yarn-ins, design sessions, lessons, and informational sessions will be scheduled in the next few months at the gallery and other locations throughout the area.
Think about your design and the area that you would like to yarn bomb.  Please make sure you register with us and let us know your site.  It would not be a good thing if 20 teams made plans for the same tree!

I’m looking forward to working with you over the next 7 months on this exciting venture!

Noel
