The Five Points Annex Gallery Proudly Presents:
March 16 - March 28, 2018

Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent is an exhibition at the Five Points Annex showing work by queer artists. The words, charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent have become the criteria to win the competition TV show Rupaul’s Drag Race. The crowned Drag Superstar must prove herself throughout the competition in these four categories to be awarded the grand prize. However, these words are not exclusively used to describe the winner of a TV competition, but also every queer person in the world. Anyone that identifies as LGBTQ+ must endure a life of being considered the “other,” since we live in a heteronormative society. To fight through the judgement, ridicule, bigotry, and pain of dealing with this stigma, one must overcome these superficial obstacles and present themselves as powerful and proud. Creating artwork is how the artists in this show take their own charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent and make it into a physical form. The exhibited work has an analogous palette focusing on light and color. Glittery backgrounds, pulsating light, pastel blocks of color, and sexual/sexualized forms seen in the show all nod to the “gay” aesthetic, but each piece also has their own narratives, which illustrate the identities of each artist. Even though stereotypically gay elements are presented in this show, the intent is for the viewer to see beyond the superficial and understand that sexuality is extremely complex, yet only one piece of each human being.
