PLEASE JOIN US for a relaxed evening of interplay between
music and words. Flute Meets Poem came into being as sisters Kathi Byam (flutist) and Joan Kunsch (poet) found that music and poetry, in the right combination, could intensify an audience's experience of participation, discovery and recognition while listening. Provocative pairings chosen from a wide variety of flute repertoire and international poetry include original work by both performers. Flute Meets Poem was formed 26 years ago, and has been presented in New England, New York and Norway, in libraries, cultural centers, galleries and churches, as well as in monastic and private residential settings. Kathi Byam has been playing flute for over fifty years, teaching since l979. She plays in the Ascutney Trio and Comtu Chamber Players. Her students have been selected by audition to perform in District, AllState, and All New England music festivals. She has taught music privately in several Vermont and New Hampshire schools, and now teaches at her home studio in Springfield, VT. Recordings include Music for October's Light and a live recording of her Fifty Year Jubilee Recital, which includes excerpts from Flute Meets Poem. Joan Kunsch, widely traveled as a guest choreographer and teacher, makes her artistic home at The Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory, where she is both faculty member and Associate Director. Her poetry, translations, articles and illustrations have appeared in journals in the U.S.A., England, Norway and India. In 2007, Antrim House Books published her poetry book, Playing With Gravity, which was followed by a CD. |
