A Note from Noel

It looks like February is going to be a busy month.  Many events have been planned - Stitch-ins at the Gallery, an info session at the Torrington Historical Society, a Creativity workshop with fabric artist Shirley Metcalf, a kids workshop and a "Guys Night".

Five Points Gallery staff and volunteers will  be visiting and working with schools, nursing and assistant living centers.

Thank you to Doreen Breen and the "Mad River Selkies" for sharing information on their plans for the Main Street Bridge.  It looks like a very exciting and ambitious project!

Please continue to pass the word about the yarn bomb.  The more the merrier!

Early Yarn Bombers Flash Their Colors
by Eric Hammer

February Yarn Bomb Update:

Ambition has already started to run wild as legions of the yarn bomb ranks weave their plans ahead of Torrington's June explosion of color. Sites and areas for the yarn bombs are being staked with push pins and the rumors of large yarn bomb coverings are simmering on the hot stove. Man or woman, young or old, novice or expert, we encourage all to join the hundreds of committed souls.

Oh Boys...

Man up Yarn Bombers!! We invite you to join us for an Intro session to Yarn Bombing, Just for Men! Women are invited to darn from the sidelines-though we ask snickering be kept to a minimum. Specific outcome is not guaranteed but you will leave enlightened, and possibly with a new change of socks, as well. Expect to feel the power that comes with success and repeated jabs into soft matter with pointy sharp things. The gathering will be held at Five Points Gallery, Thursday, February 25th at 7:00pm.

Hurrah to the following downtown entities that have already formed teams as of February 1st:

Torrington Historical Society, City Hall, Warner Theatre, Karen Rossi Studio, Kelly's Crystal, In Sheep's Clothing, Act Natural Health and Wellness, Torrington Downtown Partners, Noelke Gallery, Torrington Park and Rec., Kids Play, Democratic Town Committee, Five Points Gallery, First Act Bakery, Cook Funeral Home, Beth El Synagogue.

"Mad River Selkies" Paint Torrington with Fiber
by Doreen Breen

Picture
The group named "Mad River Selkies" are lovers of folklore, fantasy, fiber, art, Scotland, Torrington and for most of them working together on projects. The group was immediately drawn to the bridge and river since we have a couple of avid fishermen, a mermaid lover and a selkie follower.  Our piece will include at least one selkie, mermaids, fish, squid, seahorses and other water creatures, and will tell the tale of the selkies and will be installed on June 11th as part of the Torrington Yarn Bombing.

The team has six (6) major contributors. Doreen Breen, is the team leader - born in Scotland and a fabric artist. In addition: Robin McCahill - Puppeteer and fiber artist; Claudia Duhamel - artist specializing in concrete garden art; Skip Kamens - artist and graphic designer, Erin Cunliffe - artist and currently studying at University of Hartford: Hartford Art School and Karen Rossi of Karen Rossi Studios of Torrington - metal artist and mermaid lover.
